PATIENT INFORMATION What is tooth whitening? It is the process of applying a peroxide containing gel onto teeth for the purpose of whitening. Why is Stainless Smile better than any other tooth whitening product? Stainless Smile contains a patented desensitizer Hyaluronic Acid, that eliminates sensitivity by sealing the dentinal tubules and hydrating the teeth. Stainless Smile whitens and maintains the natural tooth lustre, it does not etch (erode) the teeth to whiten them, unlike other products on the market that etch teeth and require to varnish teeth to regain lustre. How does it work? The active ingredients of Stainless Smile gel enter teeth the same way as the food and drink which caused the stains in the first place. Once inside the active ingredients decompose to oxygen which in turn attacks the complex coloured molecules of the stains and oxidizes them into colourless molecules. The structure of the tooth doesn't change, only the tooth colour is made lighter. What is the difference between Day System and Night System? The Day system is based on Hydrogen Peroxide but the Night system is based on Carbamide Peroxide that changes to Hydrogen Peroxide and Urea whilst in the mouth. Urea is inert and all the bleaching is done by Hydrogen Peroxide. The ranking of the various concentrations available, starting from the strongest to the weakest is as follows: Day System - Fast Acting
Night System - Slow Acting
Both Systems achieve the same results eventually. What is the 30 Minute In-Office procedure? It is the in-surgery whitening procedure performed by your dentist using a highly concentrated peroxide, intended to kick start the bleaching process. The Take Home is then used to enhance and maintain the results of the In-Office procedure. Is it safe? Yes, tooth whitening is safe under the supervision of your dentist. How long do the results last? This is very much dependant on your lifestyle. The whitened teeth will always be lighter than they were originally. Patients who continue to use staining substances such as coffee and tobacco products are advised to repeat the process as often as recommended by your dentist. How long is the treatment? It is recommended that Day or Night system be used for half an hour, twice a day for 10-14 days treatment. Are there any side effects? No side effects when used correctly. If the whitening gel gets onto the gums, or if you use too much whitening gel in your trays, some sensitivity of the teeth and irritation of the gums can occur. These symptoms disappear soon after the treatment is completed. The Hyaluronic Acid component will minimize any sensitivity. For extremely sensitive teeth it is recommended that Stainless Smile Desensitizer Gel with a higher dose of Hyaluronic Acid is used before and/or after the treatment for 60 seconds. Who can have this treatment? It is recommended for everyone over the age of 14 years old, except patients who are pregnant or lactating. Bleaching is not recommended to patients with known allergies to peroxide and glycol. How do I know which treatment is suitable for me? By asking your dentist as he is the expert in this field. How does the Take Home whitening system work? Your dentist will make an impression of your teeth and this will be used to make a custom made tray. The tray will be trimmed below the gum line to discourage the gel from reaching the gums. Your dentist will make sure that he allows space for the gel by creating a reservoir on your tray. You wear your trays with gel for half an hour, twice a day for 10-14 days uninterrupted. Care must be taken not to overfill the tray with gel and get it on the gums. Can tooth whitening work on dead, de-nerved teeth? Yes with excellent results using the In-Office procedure which is performed by your dentist. Does bleaching also work on fillings and crowns? No bleaching only works on natural teeth. It is advisable to whiten teeth first, then wait two weeks before placing esthetic restorations. Is there anything I should avoid doing during the whitening process? Yes. Never consume food or drink during the half hour whitening process. It is important that you do not smoke during or immediately after the tooth whitening process. Also do not consume any food or drink that contains strong colors whilst undergoing treatment. Can Tetracycline and Fluorosis stains on teeth be whitened? Yes. Teeth darkened from ingestion of medication such as tetracycline and Fluorosis stains can also be whitened with the Stainless Smile In-Office and then followed by the Take Home procedure. How can I maintain my whitened teeth? By repeating the whitening procedure as often as required under the supervision of your dentist. Also, by avoiding smoking and consuming coloured food like curry, tomato sauce or drinks like tea, coffee, dark colas, red wine etc. |
